The permanent residence status is for a 5-year term. By granting a permanent residency status, residents acquire certain rights and obligations. Permanent residents can live, work and study anywhere in Canada as well as enjoy social benefits such as health care coverage. However, residents have the obligation to reside in Canada for a minimum of 2 out of 5 years and they must not commit any crime in Canada.
