Overview
The Portugal ‘Golden Visa’ or Residency by Investment (RBI) Program, incepted in 2007, allows foreigners to obtain the Portuguese residency in exchange for investment.
In September 2023, the Portuguese Parliament re-voted to reform the program, eliminating the Real Estate and Capital Transfer investment options. However, following investment avenues remain available:
- Investment in a company that creates at least 10 jobs;
- Investment in research and development;
- Investment in artistic production or cultural heritage;
- Investment in the qualifying funds;
- Investment in a commercial venture that creates at least five permanent jobs.
Each option has a set threshold, varying from EUR 250,000 to EUR 500,000.
Importantly, a twenty percent discount is applicable for the first three options if the investment is made in low-density areas (regions with less than 100 people per square kilometer or a GDP per capita below 75 percent of the national average).
Family Inclusion
Main applicants for the Portugal ‘Golden Visa’ program can include spouse or partner, children under 18, and dependent children over 18 if studying or financially dependent. They can also include parents over the age of 65 (or younger if financially dependent) of the main applicant and the spouse in the RBI application. Moreover, the Portugal ‘Golden Visa’ can also be extended to dependent siblings under the main applicant’s guardianship and other relatives, if certain dependency requirements can be proven.
